Springhare Pedetes capensis |
- Distribution:
- The entire area of southern Africa, south Kenya and Tanzania.
- Habitat:
- Sandy plans with bushes, wooden savannas with grass.
- Size:
- Both Male and Female 3 to 4 kg.
Body lenght: from 35 to 45 cm. Tail lenght from 35 to 50 cm.
- Behaviour:
- Nocturnal. During the day and the rain season it stays inside its underground burrow. When it isn't scared it move with awkward jumps. But if it's disturbed it runs away with speedy jumps. That characteristic is the source of its nickname "African Kangaroo".
Its enemies are: big snakes, the african wild cats, big owls and monitors.
- Food:
- It feeds with roots, grass, tubers, wheat and walnuts. It doesn't need water.
- Reproduction:
- A single offspring after 80 days of gestation. It can have more than one birth during the year.
- Longevity:
- From 7 to 8 years.
